My paintings are a representation of how I feel about the beautiful landscape I live in and experience daily. The light, shapes, colours and textures are my inspiration and I express this through bold gestural colours and marks. I mainly use acrylic paint, sometimes adding marks with oil pastel and I work fast usually on more than one painting at a time, the beauty of acrylic paint is it dries quickly allowing layers to be built up. I will often scratch through or scrape back a layer to reveal the colours and textures beneath.
I like to work on a large scale or on a very small scale and my work would be described as abstract, sometimes semi-abstract. I use large brushes and other materials such as pieces of card to apply paint. I am interested in colour, how colours interact with each other to create a certain feeling and energy. I use bold shapes and areas of colour that echo the forms referenced from real land or seascapes, and paint the essence of what I am seeing. Experimentation is important in my paintings, sometimes I will just have a colour in my mind and that colour would be the springboard for a painting, other times I might be painting outside looking at a ‘real life’ woodland or wintery stormy sky and the painting will be more rooted to that. I think it is essential to be open and see what happens, go with the flow.
My paintings are an excersise in looking, thinking, and feeling. I observe the natural world and translate my observations of shape and colour. I want to find that intangible element, another layer, express the feeling in my body when looking at beautiful light, sparkling water shapes and shadows.
I am currently studying for a BA fine art degree, as a mature student, at Aberystwyth University which is exciting, challenging and motivating. I am particularly interested in exploring printmaking so watch this space for print inspired new work.
